FirstPark Announces Plans for Community Dog Park
Business park plans to become the most dog-friendly business park in the country
OAKLAND, Maine – As part of National Dog Week, FirstPark announced plans for a multi-acre community dog park inside the 285-acre business park in Oakland. Jim Dinkle, executive director of FirstPark, unveiled plans and shared how and why the business park is poised to become the most dog-friendly business park in the country. The event was attended by employees from local businesses and their dogs.
“This an exciting day in FirstPark’s history. We have been talking about building a community dog park for more than two years. Based on the people and dogs in the community who already enjoy FirstPark’s walking trails and sidewalks, we wanted to create something special for the entire region to enjoy. I know this will bring a lot of smiles to many of our two-legged and four-legged friends in the community,” said Dinkle.
During the press conference, Dinkle highlighted the dog-friendly culture that has developed at FirstPark. He cited several companies that already bring their dogs to work, including two dogs at Gateway Financial partners who have their own business cards. He unveiled a full-color conceptual design sketch of the two-acre dog park. It will be built on Lot 12 at the end of Technology Drive. FirstPark intends to build the dog park with private funding in 2021, using grants, foundations and community donations. Naming rights and sponsorships for the community dog park are available and would expedite the construction of the park.
“Businesses are adapting to the new “normal” and having a strong work-life balance will be an important part of retaining and attracting new employees. We see our community dog park as a great way to attract employees to the current and future companies at FirstPark. Evidence shows employees who have dogs at work are happier and more productive. We also see the park as a way to add to the quality of life for dog owners in central Maine. With so many amenities for dogs and their owners, I strongly believe FirstPark will be the most dog-friendly business park in the country,” said Dinkle.
There are many existing amenities that make the business park dog-friendly, including well-maintained sidewalks and walking trails, a veterinary services hospital and retail location for pet food on FirstPark Drive. There are also several hotels in the area that are pet-friendly, allowing business travelers to bring their dogs to Maine when doing business at FirstPark.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the park has attracted attention from businesses in Maine, nationally and overseas. During the past nine months, the park has attracted new tenants and hired SVN | The Urbanek Group Advisors as the official commercial and industrial real estate broker for the business park.
T-Mobile is the anchor tenant and largest building in the park. Bioenergetic Healing, Gateway Financial Partners, Northern Light Podiatry, L.L.Bean, MaineGeneral, Maine Medical Partners, Maine Eye Doctors, One River CPAs, Waterville Community Dental Center and SurgiCare are also located inside the business park.
FirstPark was established by the Kennebec Valley Regional Development Authority. FirstPark’s development strategy in 1999 was built by the investment of 24 municipalities in central Maine joining to build the park to benefit from the revenue it would create.
